The Dutch artist Marcel van Hoef is one of the twelve global winners in the international VKR75 Painting Competition, initiated by the VELUX Group. Van Hoef is recorded at work in his studio. He talks about light, his technique of painting with egg-tempera and the painting Atrium he created for competition (collection VELUX group).

During Marcel’s training he experimented with the preparation of egg tempera. He was so fascinated by the special characteristics of this paint that he, up to present day, works with this technique. The painting with egg tempera is an ancient technique where pure pigments are mixed with the yolk of a chicken egg. The egg yolk is the binder in the paint. The potential and specific characteristics of egg tempera fit perfectly with the painterly and content themes Marcel uses in his work.
